Back-to-School Success Starts with Good Vision

It's that time of year again. Moms and dads all over are making sure their kids have all the gear they need for the academic year. And actually, this is the perfect opportunity to take your son or daughter to an eye exam, if you haven't already covered that base. Proper vision is central to academic success and as your son or daughter gets older, there are various stages of development that might lead to changes in his or her eyesight.

A huge percentage of learning is achieved visually. But even with this strong link between sight and learning, many parents don't seem to be aware of just how common vision problems are, and as a result, don't get their child's eyes examined regularly. As your kid's vision may change frequently, regular eye care is crucial to good school results and self esteem.

As children go through school, it becomes even more important to monitor their eyesight. Some warning symptoms include reversing numbers or letters, watery eyes and frequent eye rubbing, squinting, avoiding small print, and head tilting.

Struggling to meet the demands schoolwork can make on a student's eyes can affect his or her performance. Recently developed classroom technology, such as interactive whiteboards, can even exaggerate previously hidden vision issues. When a student doesn't have good enough vision, it isn't just their school work that suffers. It's mentally and emotionally challenging for them also.

If you're the parent of a glasses-wearing child, the start of the school year is a perfect time to reassess the suitability of his or her current frames and maybe even purchase new glasses for your child for the new school year. Even when a child can see well wearing his or her old glasses, they might not fit correctly or perhaps the optical centers of the lenses are not optimally positioned anymore due to normal development. The more your child feels good in his or her glasses, the more likely it is that he or she will wear them.

Find a good time to visit us when you're gearing up for the new school year. We'll do our very best to help our young patients begin the academic year with their vision in check.
